Roll Under Sinks 3 Ways
March 10, 2025
Roll under sinks can drastically improve accessibility. Whether in a kitchen or a bathroom, accessing the sink is a fundamental need. However, for those living with disabilities, traditional sink designs can become significant barriers. Cabinetry, plumbing obstructions, and improper height and sinks can make everyday tasks difficult or even impossible.
For wheelchair users, the standard sink setup often means struggling to reach the faucet or having to sit sideways due to lack of knee clearance. Similarly, for those with limited mobility, the depth and height of a sink can lead to discomfort or strain. Accessibility should never mean sacrificing style or functionality.
Gone are the days of awkward, angled cover sink bases. When designing an accessible home, the sink should be an empowering feature, not a limiting one. With thoughtful planning and innovative solutions, everyone—regardless of ability—can enjoy a space that meets their needs beautifully. Here are 3 ways we love to incorporate roll under sinks.
Pocket Doors for a Roll Under Sink Base
Pocket doors aren’t just for traditional doorways—they’re an innovative solution for accessible cabinetry as well. When used in kitchen and bathroom sink bases, pocket doors provide a seamless way to maximize both accessibility and aesthetics. Traditional cabinet doors swing outward and obstruct access. Pocket doors glide open and slide neatly into the cabinet base. This design reveals the roll under sinks, ensuring those with mobility aids have unobstructed access without doors getting in the way.
Beyond functionality, pocket doors help maintain a clean, clutter-free look. When closed, they conceal plumbing and storage, blending seamlessly with the rest of the cabinetry. When open, they provide ample knee clearance and easy maneuverability. These doors can be customized with soft-close mechanisms, stylish finishes, and even touch-to-open technology for a modern, user-friendly experience.
By incorporating pocket doors into sink bases, we can create a space that is both highly functional and beautifully designed.
Removable Sink Base for Roll Under Sinks
For the best of both worlds, a removable base can be the perfect solution. This offers the flexibility of a traditional sink cabinet while providing the option to convert it into a roll-under sink whenever needed. This design maintains a seamless built-in look while also creating the opportunity for under-sink storage when accessibility is not required.
One of the biggest challenges in retrofitting cabinetry for accessibility is the need to completely remove or remodel the existing cabinet base. This can be both costly and time-consuming. Traditional cabinetry is often not designed with future accessibility in mind, forcing homeowners to choose between maintaining storage space or making the area wheelchair-friendly.
A removable base eliminates this dilemma by allowing for easy modifications without permanent structural changes. These bases can be quickly taken out when needed and just as easily reinstalled when extra storage is desired. This approach not only provides adaptability for homeowners with changing mobility needs but also makes it possible to create an inclusive space without sacrificing design or functionality.
Whether planning for aging in place or preparing for potential future needs, a removable sink base is a forward-thinking solution that ensures accessibility without requiring a full renovation. It’s a small change that makes a big impact, blending flexibility, style, and practicality into one thoughtful design choice.
Open Roll Under Sinks
A more modern and design-forward option is to ditch traditional cabinetry altogether and embrace the beauty of a floating sink. These sculptural sinks not only enhance accessibility but also serve as a striking focal point in a kitchen or bathroom. By eliminating cabinetry, floating sinks create an open and airy feel. This makes spaces appear larger and more inviting while ensuring ample knee clearance for wheelchair users.
Customization is key when designing a floating sink, as the dimensions should cater to both functionality and aesthetics. Unlike standard sink installations, a floating sink can be crafted to the perfect height and depth, ensuring ease of use. Opting for materials like concrete, marble, or quartz to elevate the design and make a bold style statement.
One of the standout features of floating sinks is the opportunity to showcase the plumbing fixtures. Instead of hiding pipes behind cabinets, we can highlight exposed plumbing to complement the overall aesthetic. By embracing a floating sink design, homeowners can achieve a perfect balance between accessibility, modern elegance, and practicality—proving that universal design can be as beautiful as it is functional.
Conclusion
Designing an accessible sink—whether in the kitchen or bathroom—goes beyond functionality; it’s about creating a space that is inclusive and beautiful. From roll-under sinks with pocket doors to floating sinks that make a bold statement, there are countless ways to blend accessibility with thoughtful design. Whether you choose a removable cabinet base for future flexibility or opt for a fully open design, these solutions prove that accessibility doesn’t mean sacrificing beauty.
By prioritizing inclusive design, homeowners can create spaces that work for every body, ensuring comfort, independence, and ease of use for years to come. With so many innovative options available, making a home more accessible has never been easier—or more inspiring.
